Processing Health Savings Accounts: Paths to Success

Health savings accounts represent an unprecedented opportunity for banks to grow their deposit base, taking share from the large and growing bucket of dollars allocated to health care spending. As of early 2009, HSA balances are estimated to be roughly $6.75 billion, and accounts are growing at 40% to 60% per year.

The health savings account (HSA) arena is a small but growing part of banking. Banks need to decide whether to participate in this growth market. In a new report, Processing Health Savings Accounts, Celent helps financial institutions decide the best path for moving forward with HSA processing systems. Celent ranks the solutions using its ABCD analysis.

There are many decisions that banks need to make about HSAs:

  • Does the bank want to play in this space?
  • If so, can it use the existing core system?
  • Should the bank license another core system for HSA processing or outsource?

"Some traditional core vendors are checking the box, and others are offering competitive solutions that are worthy of consideration as stand-alone HSA solutions independent of their traditional core processing," says Bart Narter, Senior Vice President of Celent’s Banking group and author of the report.

This report describes the core systems available today to support HSAs. Some of the solutions are available for license; others may be outsourced, including call centers staffed with HSA experts.

The 72-page report contains 10 figures and 62 tables. A table of contents is available online.
