Abstract

The increasing importance of APIs in financial services has moved the middle layer to a customer facing role. Historically such layers were hidden in a wider core system architecture or constructed from integration technologies as the industry adopted SOA. Now the insurance industry is increasingly looking for a solution both to digitally enable the multiple back office solutions, but also to act as a new route to join the API economy.

This slide deck and accompanying video details the varying definitions and possible capabilities in a digital insurance middle layer. The presentation starts by discussing some of the challenges and why this iteration is insurance specific. The presentation goes on to discuss some of the routes insurers are taking to build a digital middle layer as well as provide some examples of off-the-shelf solutions available on the market.

Celent intends to continue this line of research in 2021.
